Kym Olsen wins (again) in Taiwan Qualifying

Local golfer Kym Olsen has sent the following email about his travels both in Asia and locally back in Victoria.

Hi all.
The link below is to the Taiwan Senior PGA facebook page. It shows some youtube clips from the Taiwan TV show which filmed some of the final day Q school and presentation’s.

There are also some photo’s of the scores, timesheets and the course. If you read/write/listen to Chinese you are way ahead of me. Also remember now , the tv adds 10 lbs. (that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it) hahaha

LOCAL NEWS
Just finished playing the Senior Victorian Open but did not play well enough on the final day. Too many dumb mistakes. Finished around 5th or 6th 4 shots back. Certainly is a treat though playing in the same field as guys like David Good, Terry Price, Ossie Moore, Jim Lapsley. Also played the first round with Dean Jones , an Australian legend in cricket who was very enjoyable to play with. Very down to earth and light hearted.

Vic Open was played at Beacon Hills east of Melbourne. Very small greens, lots of rain with a few delays. We couldn’t finish our round on Thursday arvo and had to come back Friday morning for a 7.15am hit off to finish the last 4 holes. My last was a par 5 which I reached in 2 to the front edge and took 4 to get down to finish at 1 over which was 1 shot back. The rest is history as they say. The staff at Beacon Hills did an unbelievable job in getting the course ready as well as keeping it in a great playing condition. I believe it was the most rain out there since 1913 so that should give you an indication as to how much rain. Thanks to my good friend Alex McKay (chop to those that know him) for giving me a sponsors exemption.

I finished 3rd in Sorrento Golf club last Thursday, thanks to my good friend, Andrew Davis giving me a sponsor exemption. The conditioning of the Sorrento Golf club was immaculate and should anyone get an opportunity to play there , do not pass it up.

THE FUTURE EVENTS
It also appears now that by qualifying on the Taiwan Senior PGA tour, the Australian PGA has now granted me status to play the remaining events here in Australia albeit with no exemption category which basically means that if the field is full I don’t have a spot. Pretty unlikely this will happen except for maybe the Australian Open and the season ending tour championship. Great news because it means I can hopefully cash some cheques.

Anyway hope you enjoy the facebook clips. Look forward to catching up with everyone along the journey.

Kym Olsen wins in Indonesia

Local golfer Kym Olsen (Devilbend and The National) started his Asian Senior Tour campaigns with a great win in the Indonesian Masters at Royal Sumatra Golf Resort. Kym won on a play-off with a local golfer to take out his first professional win after winning a pro-am in Malaysia a week ago.

Kym gained his tour card only three weeks ago so to win so early in his pro career is a great effort - the PDGA congratulates him.

We will follow his career as he enters more tournaments.

A hole lot better on fairways - James Marchesani

James Marchesani, the 20-year-old son of former VFL/AFL Fitzroy and Carlton mid-fielder Frank Marchesani continues to make a name for himself in America at golf.

He won the Phil Mickelson Freshman of the Year Award after his first season for Oklahoma City Unversity. The award recognises him as the most outstanding freshman in National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics golf as awarded by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

He posted five top-ten finishes in nine tournaments this season. he captured all conference acclaim with a tie for third in the Sooner Athletic Conference Championships at Cherokee Hills Golf Club in Catoosa. Marchesani's other finishes included runner-up showings in the UC Ferguson Classic at Lincoln Park Golf Course and the Oklahoma City Spring Classic at Dornick Hills Golf and Country Club in Ardmore. He was also selected in the Ping NAIA All-American first team, consisting of the top 10 college golfers of the year.

Despite coming from a football family, Marchesani and his younger brother Anthony weren't pushed into playing football. In fact, Frank thought James would excel at golf and gave his son a set of golf clubs when he was nine.

A member of the Rosebud Country Club, Marchesani has won two club championships, as well as many district honours, but has never represented the state.

While Frank is a regular at Rosebud Country Club, he is not a scratch golfer like his two sons - a single figure handicap is still good!!. Anthony also has a big future in the game.

Twenty-year-old Victorian Bryden Macpherson has won the 2011 British Amateur with a thrilling 3&2 victory over Scotland's Michael Stewart in the 36-hole final played at the Hillside Golf Club, near Southport.

A member at the Peninsula Country Golf Club in Frankston and now domiciled in the US on a College Scholarship, Macpherson becomes only the second Australian after Doug Bachli in 1954 to win arguably the most coveted trophy in amateur golf.

The win also provides an exemption into both the 2011 British Open to be played at Royal St. Georges in July and to the 2012 US Masters at Augusta National next April.

Macpherson grew up in Somers, near Hastings, and played at Devilbend Golf Club before joining Peninsula Country Golf Club when he was 16. He was encouraged to take up golf by his grandfather, Keith, who was a seven-time club champion at Woodlands Golf Club in the 1950s and 60s.
